  • ENIL REMEMBERS THE 4th OF APRIL INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MINE AWARNESS

The General Assembly of the United Nations designated April 4th as the International day of Mine Awareness. The day is designated to raise awareness about the land mines and the progress of the process of mine destruction. According to the UN report, more than 2000 individuals are killed by land mines every month and there are even more that suffer lasting effects. Among the victims there was 80 percent of civilians and 25 percent of them were children.

Slovenia is actively engaged in assistance to mine victims. Rehabilitation in Slovenia takes place in the Institute for Rehabilitation. Cruel events that led to war in the South East Europe set bound to the Institute to continue with all efforts to limit war implications and consequences of it. In the context of all this there have been a number of activities organized. Until now 911 individuals were rehabilitated by the Institute also including children from Gaza Strip. Rehabilitation includes medical and psychosocial rehabilitation services, vocational rehabilitation, and production of prostheses and educational programs for doctors coming from mine affected countries.

International community is also faced with the problem of explosive remnants of war, which also pose a significant threat to the security. In 1998, Slovenian government established International Trust Fund (ITF) and with that the ITF began to participate in the aftermath of conflict in the Balkans.

ENIL is aware of the terrible humanitarian consequences of the ‘secret killer’ and therefore agrees with all international efforts to leave to the next generations a safer world without mines.

It is necessary to take into the consideration the two – faced policy of many developed countries with their charitable organizations assisting victims of land mines and demining minefields which are often strewn with land mines of their production. Gino Strada is a surgeon who is active in numerous conflict areas around the world (Bosnia, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Ruanda) he is also a anti war activist. In his work uncompromisingly reveals the corruption of the systems of war on behalf of piece and security to justify war as a way to achieve these objectives.

The Lisbon Treaty brings a lot of changes in the field of Common Foreign and Security Policy, together with the future Common Defence Policy which will have an operational capacity for peacekeeping, conflict prevention and strengthening international security. It encourages member states to increase military expenditure and to strengthen cooperation between the EU and NATO and establishing a European Defence Agency. All this raises fears that the trend is not going in the right direction that the conditions for peace and prosperity for the citizens need to generate by other means and in a different way.

ENIL urges the Governments, countries and the respected international organizations to an unconditional commitment and support for mine clearance activities and the dissemination of culture and practice of peace and nonviolence. That is the only way that we can hope, that one day this day will no longer need any attention.

In celebration of Mine Awareness day, our writing instructor requires us to write superior dissertation papers about this landmine education program. She said that this is our chance to both learn more about global landmine crisis that is happening worldwide and to become an active participant to the mine action community. Honestly, my interest was not in this field of study but since it's one of my paper requirements in school I don't have a choice but to obey or else I will not pass the subject. As I do my research, I realized that students should have knowledge about this global landmine threat because this will affect their future. There are already many students from several Universities and colleges participating in various activities on and off-campus. According to some researches that I have read students or youth should get involved in global issues as early as now because the future is in their hands.
